{"id":84,"date":"2018-05-04T14:23:55","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T18:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/?p=84"},"modified":"2018-05-17T16:07:56","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T20:07:56","slug":"opening-night-for-a-right-to-the-city-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/2018\/05\/opening-night-for-a-right-to-the-city-exhibition\/","title":{"rendered":"Opening Night for A Right to the City Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>A post by Samantha Dols, PhD candidate at American University<\/i><\/p>\n<p>An enthusiastic crowd of more than 1200 people poured into the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum for the opening night of the new exhibit, &#8220;A Right to the City.&#8221; Buzzing with energy, the space accommodated an eclectic mix of installations and experiences, all of which helped illuminate Washington DC&#8217;s rich history of neighborhood organizing and transformation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3679.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-85 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3679-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3679-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3679-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3679-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our repurposed <b>payphone<\/b> helped anchor the end of the exhibit. Participants could listen to some of the oral histories gathered by Smithsonian researchers as part of the exhibit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3688-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87\" src=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3688-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3688-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3688-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/communityphonebooth.net\/dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_3688-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Having recently moved to DC from Toronto, the man at the phone is excited by the idea of hearing stories about his new city.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Curious to see how passersby would engage with the phone, I captured some photos and conducted a few brief interviews.<\/p>\n<p><em>A few quick observations:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>A payphone provokes surprise.<\/b> As one said, &#8220;Oh, it actually works? I thought it was a prop.&#8221; Others kept their distance, seemingly perplexed at the sight of an old phone in a standalone space.<\/li>\n<li><b>Preparing to call in was possible <\/b><b><i>without <\/i><\/b><b>using the phone. <\/b>A handful of people didn&#8217;t touch the phone but instead took photos of the board beside it that outlined instructions on how to call-in and listen to stories. They also took the informational business cards on the side of the phone with similar instructions.<\/li>\n<li><b>Intrigued yet intimidated\u2026 and wanting time to offer something valuable.<\/b> When I stepped in to explain what the payphone is all about, a common response was one of intrigue and intimidation. People were interested in participating but felt they needed time to truly participate. He said he &#8220;barely recognizes the city anymore&#8221; and plans share his story by calling into the payphone soon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Overall, it was fascinating for me to witness the responses and questions posed by patrons.
